Adolescent Weddings
In Thrace Greece,
where at dawn 120.000 Muslims, members of the so-called Muslim
minority group, kneel to Allah, the prevailing law is the sharia.
The mufti- the Muslim religious leader- is also the superior judge,
blessing, among others, the perpetration of adolescent weddings,
for which- under the Greek Civil Code- a court order is also required.
Yet tradition keeps Muslims marrying as young as 12, a social custom
in direct conflict with the European Human Rights Treaty as well
as the International Human Rights Agreement.
